The Feering Parish Council Environmental Working Group is moving ahead with plans to make Bridge Meadow an actual meadow. Cllr. Dobson said;
“The Bridge Meadow Project has been on the groups agenda for some time. Unfortunately Covid and other commitments have got in the way until now.
“For those that are not aware, Bridge Meadow is the green area with the Sweet Pea Sculpture on it, before you cross over the river into Kelvedon. It has always been felt that more could be done with this area, especially as the properties nearest to it have limited outside space.
“The area is perfect for a wildflower meadow. It is in a good sunny spot and there is very little top soil due to the many services running beneath it. The hope is to have an annual wildflower display with paths cut into it and sweet peas growing up the sculpture as a reminder of the role that Feering and Kelvedon have played in the seed industry over the years. We hope that over time a bench can be placed on the site, along with an information board for educational purposes on wildflowers and their ecology.
“Over the next month the area will be mowed, scarified and rotovated to a fine tilth before wild meadow seeds are sown. The sweet pea sculpture will be cleaned up and containers of sweet peas added around it. The trees will be removed as they have never thrived due to their growing conditions with one having had its leader shoot snapped off. We hope to rescue the other and re-locate it if we can. We are hopeful that in the summer there will be a good display of wildflowers.”
Feering Parish Council and Cllr Dobson would like to give thanks to Peter Miller from Kings Seeds who donated the seed mix to us – we have a mixture of annual and perennial wildflower seeds to get us started. We would also like to thank GG Adams, our handyman, for his help in preparing the site as well as the Stoney Flint Allotment Association who have agreed to lend us their rotovator. Lastly we would like to thank the residents who have already volunteered their help and all the members of the Environmental Working Group for their continued support and dedication.”
